Welcome to the website of Thomas Redfern
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon
If you have a muscle, tendon, bone or joint problem Mr Redfern will be happy to try to help you. Though he specialises in problems in the shoulder and elbow, he continues to offer a full Orthopaedic and Trauma service including seeing patients with neck and lower back problems. Most shoulder surgery is undertaken on a day case or overnight stay basis using modern keyhole techniques wherever possible. Mr Redfern is one of the few surgeons in the UK who use Topaz micro-debridement for the treatment of Tennis Elbow. He uses an ultrasound scanner in the clinic to assist in “one stop” diagnosis of shoulder conditions.
Mr. Redfern was educated at Haileybury College, Hertford and at the University of Manchester Medical School, qualifying as a doctor in 1976. He undertook basic surgical training in Salford and was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1979. After a period as a general surgical registrar in Bury, he became an orthopaedic trainee on the Liverpool Circuit including 6 months at Wrightington Hospital and 18 months at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. He gained a Master of Orthopaedic Surgery from the University of Liverpool in 1984, writing a thesis on the design and outcome of shoulder replacements. In 1990 he was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon at Leighton Hospital, Crewe.
Mr.Redfern has been an active member of the British Elbow & Shoulder Society in 1988 having developed a special interest in shoulder and elbow surgery in 1983. He has published papers on shoulder surgery and has described an approach to the shoulder. He now spends 95% of his clinical time on shoulder and elbow surgery, He enjoys teaching and training shoulder surgery, has frequent visitors to his theatres for educational purposes and has been asked to demonstrate the Topaz micro-debridement technique at an international training meeting in Germany.
Mr Redfern has prepared medico-legal reports for the Courts since 1983. He accepts instruction from Plaintiff and Defence solicitors in equal numbers, offering appointments within 2 weeks and reports completed and returned within a further 2 weeks providing all relevant case notes and papers are available. Most cases relate to injuries of the neck, lower back, shoulder and elbow. Home visits for severely disabled patients can be arranged in exceptional circumstances.
